Fort Kent Fire & Rescue Department
Fire Department is located at 16 Dufour Street.
The Fort Kent Fire and Rescue Department is a paid-on-call/stipend fire department that supplies fire and rescue services to the Town of Fort Kent and regionally to the adjoining communities of St. John Plantation, Wallagrass, and New Canada which have no fire departments. The Fort Kent Fire Department response area consists of an area of 184 square miles with a population of approximately 6,600 residents.
In 2015 the department was recognized by the Maine Department of Labor and received the S.H.A.P.E (Safety and Health Award for Public Employers) Award. The award is given to public employers who have demonstrated 100% compliance with OSHA regulations, required training, and record keeping. It is one of only 45 out of approximately 430 fire departments in the State of Maine to receive the award. We continue to maintain those standards to retain the certification.
The Fort Kent Fire Department provides a full range of emergency services including structural firefighting, hazardous materials protection and mitigation, rescue services, and public fire education. The department operates three Engines, one 95 ft. Tower Ladder quint, a Heavy Rescue, and a Forestry/Utility Vehicle. The department also has a state-of-the-art Rescue Boat and a Snowmobile Rescue Ambulance with skis for the snowmobile trails.
The snow ambulance has wheels that replace the skis to be able to provide ATV trail rescue capability in the warmer months. The Fort Kent Fire and Rescue Department is led by a Fire Chief with a full NIMS-compliant organizational structure including an NFPA 1521 Health & Safety Officer dedicated to NFPA 1500 standards of firefighter health & safety practices.
The Fort Kent Fire and Rescue Department recognizes and practices other widely accepted regulatory and national standards within the Fire Service. The Fort Kent Fire and Rescue Department manages its own local training with assistance from Maine Fire Training Institute. The department has an active recruitment and retention program, and we continue to recruit and train new members. We also offer continuing education in the fire service through the Maine Fire Training Institute which offers a full range of certifications from Firefighter I and II NFPA 2001 including fire officer programs.
